Phil Ivey has been branded as the greatest poker player on the globe by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching turning one. His papa taught Phil penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. He routinely told his elders that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not let the adverse feedback from others destroy his goal of being one of the strongest poker players in the world.
He began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and winning was not a common outcome at the time. Phil made his mark at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he achieved two final tables and came away with his first World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated a number of the well known pros including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to hard work and a continuing passion for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. Phil admits to making mistakes in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a regular basis.
