Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker competitor on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to Jersey before reaching the age of 1. His grandfather taught Phil one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was addicted to poker and wished to pickup whatever he could about the game. Phil would tell his elders that he was planning on being a professional poker player. He did not allow the adverse comments from others destroy his goal of being one of the best poker competitors in the world.
He began competing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He honed his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and winning wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he achieved 2 final tables and won his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he destroyed a number of the better known professionals which includes "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Ivey credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal love for poker. He states that he’s picking up skills every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. He admits to making blunders every single session of poker and always strives to get better.
Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he prefers winning cash games on a regular basis.
