Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker contender in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he could about the game. He routinely would tell his elders that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t let the adverse feedback from others kill his dream of being one of the greatest poker players in the world.
Phil started competing intently after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his game at the casinos of Atlantic City. The initial few years for Phil were a teaching period and coming away with a win was not a normal thing at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a two dollar, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
Phil decided to take his skills to the successive level and moved out west to Sin City. He continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He says that he’s learning every day and is quite abashed about his success. Phil knows he makes mistakes in each game of poker and always strives to get better.
Even though Phil has won some big tournaments, he likes destroying money games on a regular basis.
